Character Design Contest

Here's the entries for the character design contest. There were some great entries, good job everyone.

My picture was inspired by Nate’s story that he’s currently working on and the hardworking fairies in it. I’m not good at faces but I love costumes so I wanted to explore what they would wear.

I wanted to work on giving my character emotion this time around and also see if I could create the same character twice in different settings and different angles and see if they really looked like the same character. I am happy with the emotions - one being quiet and focused, and the other proud and excited. I am not sure if they look at all alike though. Thank you for the book ideas. I am excited to learn more.

I was exploring the character design of the main character of a story I’m currently writing for my baby daughter. It’s all about the Tooth Fairy and how she becomes famous all over the world. I’m pretty happy with where I have gotten to, although it may not be the final product.

Here are some quick sketches followed by explorations of the gestures applied to the character designs:

  1. Hey, great work everyone, really. I encouraged my wife, Aubrey to do one and I think she did a great job. She's really more into costume design than illustration but I convinced her this contest would be fun for her. Kristi, your drawing this week is amazing. I could pick out little technical elements if you wanted me to but mainly I just want you to know that you are getting so proficient on making fun illustrations time after time. Your style is becoming very interesting and fun to look at; keep it up!

Mine, I like it less now that it's up on the blog but I think I'm getting closer. Scott, I loved how you applied the gesture drawings to your fun characters for your story. The bubble illustrations look very loose and floaty like a bubble but the girl comes across as more rigid. Maybe if she was also more flexible and extreme like a little child is, everything very accentuated. Your work is great Scott, it's hard to pick out things to critique.

  2. Way to go Aubrey...looks like a costume design sketch. I REALLY like the leaf apron...Nate should use it.

Kristi, I love watching your progress. There's a definite contrast between the two drawing here. Almost like the one on the left is a younger sister. One big thing I see is on the right, the skirt is really restricting the movement of the legs...which makes that element seem more contained than the rest of the drawing....which is okay to have contrast within a single character, I just thought I'd point it out if it was unintentional. Some anatomy that could use some tweeking is : wrists, ankles, hands. It's good to group the fingers like you did on the left girl's right hand. Like the idea as well, this story could take many directions

Nate, I bet you had Aubrey pose for you, I can see it. The 3-dimesional quality, anotomy, color sense, etc. in your work is looking better and better. I also really like the attitude. The only thing standing out to me is that the neck could be better connected to the head : which is cocked to the side, so the neck should move over to reflect that.

Mine...I should have simplified the anatomy of the girl sooner. I found myself fiddling too much with the dress and realize I could have done better gestures by first getting the dynamism in the body, then adding on the dress and other detail.

Great contest, though. Way to go everyone!

  3. Hey Kristi, I opened a book tonight and realized I had forgotten to mention it. It's called Dream Worlds by Hans Bacher. It demystifies the great production design you see from Mary Blair and others.

  4. It is so fun to get a glimpse into others imaginations and build on your own just by drawing. I am catching the fever. Aubrey, I love the outfits. We just finished watching the new tinker bell movie. I wonder if it would be wise staying away from the green leaf look. I don't know what colors you were thinking, but I think this would look awesome with fall colors. What could you do with grass fringe, feathers, small berries? Just some ideas. Because of our new movie and Liezl's loose tooth, we loved Nate's take on the tooth fairy. We love her headband and hair and confident attitude. Scott it is fascinating how you sketch out your character's different positions and I can see how helpful it is to get every angle of her

  5. I agree with Scott's comment, if I remember right the Dream Worlds book is a good one. Scott let me borrow it once. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the contest Kristi. I was wondering...the drawing you did this week, is it for a story idea you had? I'm going to be posting the next contest soon...hopefully tomorrow after my big final. I just checked the blog now to take a break from studying and wanted to see. Let me know if there's something I can do to help you with where you want to get, using the contests.

  6. The sketches had no direction. One was just when I was doing yoga with the girls and the second was to get liezl excited about wearing a modest mermaid halloween costume. You are the mastermind behind this opperation and are doing a fantastic job. What ever you choose.
